Ask and Ye Shall Receive

In an earlier post I asked the provincial government to “produce one online video ad, and ask people to spread the word via the government web site".
Well, the ad is online (I may have missed it last week), and there are two ways to watch it.
- Go to the government web site and download an high-res MPEG file, or…
- If you can see a big orange box below that reads “Click here to Play” then it means you can watch the video right here in the comfort of the Fair Deal web site (click the box) (I took the liberty of converting the MPEG file to Macromedia Flash Video; if you have Flash 7 installed you should see the box below. You can also download Macromedia Flash in about 15 seconds).
The Danny Williams government is reaching out to people online. This is a good sign; ask and ye shall receive.

“It’s About Pride” say it all. Newfoundlanders and Labradorians are a Proud People. Unfortunally we have been “HAD” by all our Provincial Premiers since Mr. Smallwood. That is untill now. Thank you Mr. Williams. I have pride in Newfoundland and Labrador. “It’s About Pride”

Comment by linda — 2/22/2005 @ 7:01 pmJim,if it hadnt been for Joey Smallwodd,we wouldnt be in the boat where in today,(or maybe I should say,we’d still be in the boats)so I agree with what youre saying 100%!!
Comment by linda — 2/22/2005 @ 7:03 pmOn the one hand we have Danny’s $200,000 ad proclaiming that “Today a new pride is sweeping this land…. we will sieze the opportunity, we will proudly take control of our future".
On the other hand we have some moron, an employee of Danny’s government, at the Heart Stop Lounge last Friday night “screeching-in” visitors to the Scott Tournament of Hearts; shaming us with that imbecilic ritual of cultural debasement. Go figure!!!
Comment by Lloyd — 3/1/2005 @ 9:58 pmJeez Lloyd, “cultural debasement".
It’s a proud honour to those of us who want acceptance into NL. And why, with the way you just went on, I’m not sure. I guess it’s because there are only a few people who look at it as an “imbecilic ritual".
Lighten up a tad and relearn how to laugh at yourself. I laugh with people not at them. Yes, the unnamed “journalista” pushed it over the edge with her racist remarks but an even bigger issue is that you seem to want the rest of Canada to win by removing distinct society and cultural traditions from N AND L just because you don’t like a shot of rum or making out with a cod.
Remember, as a Newfoundlander initiating “come from awayers” (CFA I’ve been called) you are not the one who hasta kiss the fish. It’s been those of us CFA’ers who YOU get to embarrass with the “screetching in” and decision to self-denigrate.
As a “real” Newfoundlander you are not required to be “screetched in” by a tradition that ridicules the “screetchee” more than the “screetcher".
Geesh, b’y ya wanna take away callin’ people b’y too? I never laughed so hard in my life the day I heard someone say, “Mudder b’y” to their mom!
That’s not laughing at someone it’s enjoying a healthy sense of humour. See if you can refind yours!

So, once again I’m regaled with the newfie mantra. Understandable, I suppose, insofar as there can be no rational defense for such stupidity. Anyone who would defend the moronic screech-in ritual as being even remotely connected to our “distinct society and cultural traditions” demonstrates clearly that that have absolutely no understanding of what they are talking about. It’s a case of , “Where ignorance is bliss,……”
Newfieism , in all its various manifestations is like an insidious infestation that has eaten right into the soul of the nation and has contributed far more to its socio/economic demise than even the catastrophic confederation blunder.
There is a good deal of evidence to suggest that times are changing, so I wouldn’t be so sure that, “….there are only a few people who look at it as an “imbecilic ritual"‘
As for your advice, Fred, thanks but no thanks! As a “real” Newfoundlander I have no problem distinguishing between what is genuine Newfoundland humour, and what is idiocy.
Comment by Lloyd — 3/5/2005 @ 4:55 pmLloyd,
Please provide to me a little guidance as to what Newfoundland humour is then. I have recently heard that it no longer includes the musings of Rick Mercer, Mary Walsh, et al. Please be so kind as to provide me with examples of what is appropriate now-a-days so I can balance my former belief system with what is progessively becoming more conservative…
Sorry ’bout the play on words. Was that funny?
